Day Two of the 12th Annual Youth Firefighter Camp

June 16, 2026

June 16, Day 2 was an awesome day for our campers!

The Cadet group went off-site to Limerick Community Park Pickleball Courts to experience and participate in search-and-rescue demonstrations with the Greater Philadelphia Search and Rescue team at the back of the park. While there, they learned how to perform a large area search for clues to find a missing person, patient packaging, scene safety, radio communication, and more about search and rescue!

Back at the Limerick Fire Station, the rest of the kids rotated through six exciting stations:

At the 911 Station, they learned how to properly call for help in an emergency, including what to say, and were introduced to command and dispatch terminology. This helped them understand the meaning behind common emergency phrases.

At the Hose Station, the kids learned about different kinds of hoses, checked out the pump system on the Engine, and, the best part, got to use the hoses!!!

At the Hydrant Station, the kids learned how to open a hydrant, the types of valves firefighters use on hydrants, and how to attach a five-inch hose. The kids even practiced opening a hydrant themselves.

Firefighter Vince Russell worked with the kids on water rescue! The kids had the opportunity to participate in a water rescue demonstration where they "rescued" their fellow campers from "stuck cars" in a "flooded area." "Turn around, don't drown!"

At the Forcible Entry Station, the kids learned how to enter through a locked or blocked door rather than cutting holes in a house to gain entry. "Try before you pry" was the motto, and the kids got to use a halligan bar with leverage to properly force through a door before having door control and entering with a deployed hose.

Finally, Perkiomen Fire Company Tanker 66 visited to demonstrate water flow at a fill site when an area lacks hydrants and needs to use tankers to deliver water to a fire scene. At this Tanker Station, the kids got to open the water valve and tour the tanker. The kids unanimously voted that this was their favorite station!
