Monday Night Training: CAN Operations
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

November 17, 2025

On Monday, November 17, the Limerick crew went to the Skippack Burn Facility for CAN Training. Firefighters took turns entering the burn building in small groups to watch fire behavior and practice using water cans (CAN) in live-fire situations.

During the training, the crews learned about how heat layers form and how fires grow. They observed how hot gases built up near the ceiling as the fire grew stronger and how these layers gradually moved down. The training also showed how using a water can can help manage heat. Even a small amount of water sprayed into the hot gas layer can absorb heat, disrupt heat layers, and slow the downward movement of heat. This demonstration highlighted how valuable the CAN is for controlling fires and protecting the environment.

Each crew received hands-on training on how to fill, charge, and maintain the water cans. They learned the right amount to fill the can, how to ensure it is pressurized correctly, and how to make sure it is ready for immediate use before entering. Through repeated practice, the firefighters gained useful experience in preparing and using the CAN, showing its importance for cooling down the area quickly and reducing fire risks before advancing the hose line.
