Limerick Personnel Complete Heavy Vehicle Rescue Operations Training

October 4, 2025

On October 4, members of the Limerick Fire Department participated in an intensive 8-hour heavy vehicle rescue operations training. The training was instructed by Elder Technical Rescue Services, whose expertise guided the department through advanced rescue techniques involving large commercial vehicles and passenger cars—scenarios that demand rapid assessment, coordination, and technical expertise.

The day’s training featured two realistic crash simulations:
• School Bus vs. Passenger Car: Crews were challenged with extrication and stabilization techniques following a simulated collision between a school bus and a passenger vehicle. Firefighters practiced working around the high structural integrity of buses, managing multiple patient scenarios, and safely accessing and removing victims under tight conditions.
• Trash Truck Underride Incident: The second scenario involved a simulated underride collision where a passenger vehicle had gone underneath the rear of a trash truck. This complex and hazardous setup required rescuers to carefully deploy specialized tools and cribbing systems to safely extricate victims while ensuring crew safety.

Throughout the day, firefighters rotated through multiple stations focused on vehicle stabilization, tool operations, and team-based extrication procedures under time constraints.

This essential training was made possible through the generous support and partnership of Auto Rescue, who provided all vehicles as well as the training location, and Hawk's Towing & Recovery, who assisted with stabilization during the underride scenario. Their contributions enabled us to create realistic, hands-on learning experiences for our crews.

As heavy vehicle incidents continue to present unique challenges on our roadways, training like this ensures that Limerick personnel are equipped with the knowledge and experience to perform safe and effective rescues.
