| June 18: Another fun day in the books for Day 4 of the Kids Firefighter Camp! Even though we had some rain, it didn't take the smiles and the fun away! The Cadet group went off-site to Trinley Park to learn from the LFD Water Rescue Team. They practiced throwing rope bags, explored the rescue boats, learned about boat operation safety, and created a movable control point using webbing and carabiners. The most exciting part of the trip? Riding up and down the Schuylkill River in the rescue boats! Back at the Limerick Station, the kids rotated through six different training stations: At the Stove Fire Station, the kids learned how to safely extinguish a stovetop pot fire by covering it with a lid and why it's important to keep an oven door closed during an oven fire. They then had the opportunity to use real fire extinguishers to put out a controlled oven fire. Auto Rescue Salvage was one of our visitors, and the kids learned how to use the tow truck's mechanisms to load and tow cars. In the training room, the kids learned from Limerick Twp Fire Marshals Markland and Semmeles about fire investigation and looking for the cause and origin of a fire. The National Fire Sprinkler Association from New Jersey visited and demonstrated the effectiveness of a sprinkler on a live fire. The kids loved watching the sprinklers in action! We welcome the Montgomery County Hazmat Team as one of our special guests, and the kids got to learn about them! They got to try on the Hazmat suits, see the truck and equipment, and learn how to stop a basic Hazmat leak. Carl Flack tested all the kids at the end of the day, and everyone passed, remembering the Hazmat motto "We walk in while others run out!" Outside at the Rescue, the kids toured the truck and saw all its cool tools! They learned how a pulley system works and got a chance to try it out themselves! In between all the sprinkles of rain, thanks to Mother Nature, each group got a picture with the trucks they were named after! |
