| June 17: We had a fun Day 3 of Kids Firefighter Camp with lots of water activities and having some awesome visitors! At the EMS Station, the kids learned the basic components of emergency medical services with Freedom Valley EMS. They learned how to use the stretchers and stair chairs, toured the ambulance, and discussed various pieces of medical equipment. Some of the kids even got to see what being in a stretcher is like and play with the buttons! At the Confined Space Station, the kids rescued a person "trapped" in a tight space. They worked as a team to safely send in three rescuers in a rotation. The rescuers attached the stokes basket to a rope system and then safely hauled the patient out of the confined space to safety. Inside the bays at the Fire Police Station, the kids learn about what fire police do, such as directing traffic, closing roads, and using flashlights and signs. The kids were split into groups and competed against each other in a race through traffic cones while being directed away from a "road closed" sign and competing to put up signs. One of the most exciting highlights of the day was meeting a couple of Limerick Police Officers—and K-9 Cardi! Officers Johnston and Riley spoke with campers about their jobs as police officers, what they wear, and gave the kids a tour of the police car! The kids even got to try on the police officers' vests, and a couple got to "arrest" Limerick Twp Fire Inspector Sherlock! K-9 Cardi showed off her sharp skills as a police dog and was rewarded with plenty of petting and affection from the kids! At the Sprinkler Station, the kids also had an opportunity to get wet by wedging sprinkler heads to stop the water flow. Outside, Upper Frederick Fire Company created a push barrel hose battle station! The kids had to compete to get the barrel to the other side of the opponents by spraying water from a hose. A special thanks to the Centre Square Fire Company for letting Upper Frederick and us borrow the hose and barrel water battle setup! The Cadet group participated in hands-on training to become certified in CPR/AED and first aid in the Limerick Station training room. Cadets learned how to perform child and adult CPR, use AEDs, treat a choking victim, bandage, stop the bleed, and use tourniquets. The day was quite a success, and the kids loved all the stations! |
