2025 Youth Firefighter Camp: Day 1

June 16, 2025

On June 16, the Limerick Fire Department kicked off its 11th annual Youth Firefighter Camp!

We were excited to welcome approximately 160 campers for a fun-filled week of hands-on firefighting activities and learning experiences.

Today at Youth Firefighter Camp, campers got hands-on experience with a variety of important fire safety skills and equipment!

At the Gear Station, they learned about basic firefighter gear by watching firefighters suit up and go on air. Campers then had the chance to try on real firefighter gear—and were even issued their very own set to use throughout the week!

At the 911 Station, they learned how to properly call for help in an emergency, including what to say, and were introduced to command and dispatch terminology—helping them understand the meaning behind common emergency phrases.

At the Fire Extinguisher Station, campers discovered the different types of extinguishers, how they work, and which type to use for various fire scenarios.

Outside, the kids toured the Ladder, Tower, and Marine units, exploring the equipment carried on each apparatus and how it's used during different types of emergencies.

Inside the Fire Prevention Trailer, campers learned about fire safety in the kitchen and bedroom. They took part in a realistic smoke simulation with active fire alarms, practiced identifying hazards, learned to feel doors for heat, and safely exited through a window during the drill. Firefighters emphasized the importance of having a family fire escape plan—a vital step in being prepared for a real emergency at home.

One of the most exciting highlights of the day was meeting several Limerick Police Officers—and K-9 Nischa! Officers Daywalt, Roche, McGuigan, and Miller spoke with campers about bicycle safety and showed the special gear they wear as bicycle officers. K-9 Nischa was a big hit, as Officer McGuigan shared about her important role in the department. Afterward, Nischa enjoyed plenty of petting and affection from the kids!

We hope everyone had an amazing time during Day 1 of Fire Camp—and we can't wait to see you tomorrow for more fun and hands-on firefighter activities!
